The Meaning Behind the single “Vicious” by Idrees

A lot of people have been asking what my first single entitled “Vicious” from the debut album ‘Scratch The Surface’ depicts. Well I’m here break it down for you!

Vicious was actually the first song concept I ever wrote into a full song format. There are 3 verses. The first two were written in my early college days during 2005. The last verse was written in the middle of 2008. Although these verses were written a long time ago, they may have been altered more recently with a fine tooth comb due to the relevance they played more currently in my life. Let’s break down each verse.

Verse#1: This verse is more of a personal one for me. It relates to a personal first-person touch of embedding the feeling ‘vicious’ and how my surroundings have affected me personally. It also talks about my reaction after the feeling of being ‘vicious’ has overtaken.

Verse#2: Here is where it gets a little more complex. This is referring more about the media and how they can depict you; good or bad. Cause and effect also comes into play: if you’re depicted as being vicious by people or the media, occasionally….you will act that way.

Verse#3: Now this is where the song takes a twist. Since this was written at a more recent date in comparison to the other verses, the third verse displays my analysis of the term ‘vicious’ from a third point of view. It also talks about how people react to situations where feelings of viciousness arise (by using metaphors and examples of situations).

Chorus x2: “Some say I’m vicious, others say I’m scandalous… but either way…none of them can handle us, what can I say…every day’s a struggle full of trouble ‘til life crumbles, then you know it’s time to bust.”

The chorus is defined as: People/media will tell you that you act one way (Vicious), or you are a certain way (Scandalous). Whatever they label you as, you’re still going through the daily struggles of life. Therefore, you have to act and keep yourself afloat or the unexpected tide’s of life may wash you and your purposes away.
